Orvieto – Assisi

Driving through a stunning scenery, our first stop will be Orvieto, perched on top of a large butt of volcanic tuff; the city actually dramatically rises out of the valley below, like an island from the sea.

Orvieto is mainly famous for its Duomo, one of the most important examples of Gothic architecture in Italy.

In winter the theatres, squares and streets echo with the music of the annual Winter Jazz Festival, attracting musicians and visitors from all over the world.

Besides its Etruscan ruins and middle-age monuments, Orvieto boasts a fascinating underground labyrinth of passages with caves and tunnels that lie beneath the surface.

We’ll eventually move on to Assisi, known all over the world as the birthplace of St. Francesco d’Assisi.

In the Basilica where Francesco’s remains rest, worked the greatest artists of that time: Cimabue, Giotto, Simone Martini and many others.

The Basilica was badly damaged by an earthquake of 26 September 1997, during which part of the vault collapsed, killing four people inside the church and carrying with it a fresco by Cimabue.

The edifice and was closed for two years for restoration and reopened on Christmas 1999.

The city is very pretty and old, you will enjoy walking in those narrow streets looking into the small artisans’shops.

Break for lunch in a typical restaurant and than return to Rome.
